Christmas on an island

Christmas can be a very stressful time of year, we feel under pressure to get the perfect gift for each member of our family and friends. When in reality that person will not even remember what we bought them in 3 or 4 weeks. On Green Turtle Cay that pressure is lifted because you are very limited to what you can buy on a 3-mile island. Spending time with your loved ones is more important than what you can buy them.

During the run-up to the holiday season, the local churches all put on different programs whether it is Carol Singing or a play.

The Festival of Lights Committee decorate the village with lights beginning at Thanksgiving and every year they add more.

Santa comes to visit the children and the administrator’s office has a tree lighting ceremony.

There is a local parade held on January 1 st known as Junkanoo, it is a wonderful celebration with its roots in Africa. The parade is made up of locals wearing handmade pasted costumes and drummers. It is a great celebration and a wonderful start to the New Year. It is followed by a Fireworks display that is put on by the local volunteer fire department.
